Periodontics (Gum Treatment)

Take care of those gums and you can have your teeth for life.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease is a progressive inflammatory disease of gums and the surrounding tissue (bone) around the teeth. It is caused by plaque, a thick and sticky film of bacteria that builds up on the teeth. Periodontal disease is the top reasons that contribute to tooth loss after the age of 30.

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of periodontal disease. The treatments involved in periodontal disease vary depending on the progression of the disease.

In the early stage of gum disease (gingivitis), it can usually be treated successfully by removing the plaque and calculus followed by thorough brushing and flossing everyday.

In the advance stage of gum disease (periodontitis), prompt treatment such as root planing is very important to get rid of the infection and stop damage to the teeth and gums. However, a gum surgery may be needed in uncontrolled gum disease where the gums are already severely damage.
